Plot [edit]

In 17,000 B.C., the Primes (the original Autobots) got their energy from lord's day harvesters, machines that destroy stars to harness their energy. The Primes vowed never to destroy a star that sustains life. I Prime attempted to violate this rule by edifice a sun harvester on Earth, for which he was imprisoned by the other six Primes, becoming "The Fallen", the original Decepticon.

In 2009, ii years after the battle of Mission City,[North i] the Autobots and the humans have formed the Not-biological Extraterrestrial Species Treaty (NEST), a classified international job strength meant to eliminate the remaining Decepticons who are hunting the Autobots. They defeat two Decepticons, Sideways and Demolisher, in Shanghai, merely the latter tells them the Fallen is coming earlier being killed. Meanwhile, the Decepticon Soundwave hacks into a military satellite. The Decepticons steal the last known piece of the AllSpark shard from a Navy base and use it to resurrect Megatron's torso while violent off parts from one of their ain members to provide necessary repairs to his body. The Fallen sends Megatron and his second-in-control, Starscream, to capture Sam Witwicky alive and impale Optimus.

Sam, now a college educatee, has been seeing Cybertronian symbols since holding a smaller AllSpark shard; Megatron believes the symbols will lead the Decepticons to a new Energon source. The shard brings many of the kitchen appliances to life and they try to kill Sam and his parents; Bumblebee rescues them. Sam gives the shard to his girlfriend Mikaela Banes, who later captures the Decepticon Wheelie as he attempts to steal it. Afterwards existence attacked by Alice, a Decepticon Pretender posing every bit a college pupil, Sam, his roommate Leo, and Mikaela are captured past the Decepticon Grindor before Optimus and Bumblebee rescue them. Sam, Mikaela, and Leo then observe alien good and former Sector Vii amanuensis, "Robo-Warrior" Seymour Simmons, who reveals the Transformers visited Earth eons ago and the most ancient, known as Seekers, remained hidden on Earth. With assistance from Wheelie, they track down an elderly Decepticon turned Autobot Seeker named Jetfire at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. They employ their shard to revive Jetfire, who teleports the group to Egypt. Along with Jetfire, Wheelie sides with the Autobots, and Jetfire sends them to locate the Matrix of Leadership, the dominicus harvester's key, which could also be used to revive Optimus. The group finds the Matrix, whom the Primes that punished the Fallen sacrificed themselves to hide, in Petra, merely it disintegrates into dust.

Meanwhile, NEST forces and the Autobots country virtually the Giza pyramid complex and are attacked past the Decepticons. The Constructicons combine to form Devastator, who destroys one of the pyramids to reveal the dominicus harvester inside before he is killed by the navy. A majority of the Decepticons are killed, mostly with multiple airstrike from the Navy and the Air Force, but Megatron kills Sam. Near-decease, the Primes speak to Sam, maxim that the Matrix must exist earned, non found and that he has now earned the right to bear it by fighting for Optimus. They revive Sam and grant him the Matrix, which he uses to revive Optimus. The Fallen steals the Matrix from a weak Optimus and uses it to actuate the sun harvester. After Jetfire (who was wounded by Scorponok, but was able to impale his aggressor) sacrifices himself to permit his parts to exist transplanted to Optimus, Optimus Prime destroys the harvester and kills the Fallen; Megatron and Starscream retreat. The Autobots and their allies then return to the U.s.a., and Leo and Sam render to college.

Production [edit]

Evolution [edit]

Major hurdles for the picture show'south initial production stages included the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike as well every bit the threat of strikes by other guilds. Prior to a potential Directors Order of America strike, Bay began creating animatics of activeness sequences featuring characters rejected for the 2007 film. This would allow animators to complete sequences if the Directors Lodge of America went on strike in July 2008, which ultimately did not happen.[five] [6] When asked nearly directing a sequel while promoting the showtime Transformers motion-picture show, Bay said "you accept your baby and you don't want someone else to take it".[vii]

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who had written the first film, originally passed on the opportunity to write a sequel due to schedule conflicts. The studio began courting other writers in May 2007, merely were unimpressed with other pitches and eventually convinced Orci and Kurtzman to return.[5] The studio too hired Ehren Kruger, who had impressed Bay and Hasbro president Brian Goldner with his knowledge of the Transformers mythology.[viii] The writing trio were paid $viii one thousand thousand.[5] Screenwriting was interrupted by the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike, simply to avoid production delays, the writers spent two weeks writing a treatment, which they handed in the nighttime before the strike began.[ix] Bay then expanded the outline into a 60-page scriptment,[10] which included more activity, humor, and characters.[9] [11] The three writers spent four months finishing the screenplay while "locked" in two hotel rooms by Bay; Kruger wrote in his ain room and the trio would check on each other's piece of work twice a twenty-four hour period.[12]

Orci described the film's theme as "existence away from home", with the Autobots contemplating living on World equally they cannot restore Cybertron, while Sam goes to college.[13] He wanted the focus betwixt the robots and humans "much more evenly counterbalanced",[fourteen] "the stakes [to] be college", and more focused on the science fiction elements.[15] Orci added he wanted to "modulate" the sense of humor more,[16] and felt he managed the more than "outrageous" jokes by balancing them with a more serious plot approach to the Transformers ' mythology.[17] Bay concurred that he wanted to please fans by making the tone darker,[18] and that "mums volition think information technology[']south rubber enough to bring the kids dorsum out to the movies."[xix] Ii elements were added belatedly into the motion-picture show: the Autobot Jolt—as General Motors wanted to advertise the Chevrolet Volt—and the railgun that kills Devastator, a new acquisition by the United States military.[20]

In September 2007, Paramount announced a release appointment for the sequel to Transformers in late June 2009.[21] The film was given a $200 1000000 upkeep, which was $50 million more than the first picture show,[22] although Diversity put the budget spend at over $210 million, later rebates.[iv] [1] [23] Some of the action scenes rejected from the beginning film were written into the sequel.[24] Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura subsequently stated the studio proposed filming two sequels simultaneously, but he and Bay agreed that the thought was non the right management for the series.[25]

Prior to the first film's release, producer Tom DeSanto had "a very cool idea" to introduce the Dinobots,[26] while Bay was interested in including a Transformer who transforms into an shipping carrier, a concept which was dropped from the 2007 film.[27] Orci claimed they did non incorporate these characters into Revenge of the Fallen considering they could non call back of a fashion to justify the Dinobots' pick of form,[xiii] and were unable to fit in the shipping carrier.[28] Orci after admitted that he was dismissive of the Dinobots because he does non like dinosaurs, saying "I recognize I am weird in that section."[29] All the same, he became fonder of them during filming because of their popularity with fans.[30] He added "I couldn't see why a Transformer would experience the need to disguise himself in front of a bunch of lizards. Flick-wise, I hateful. One time the general audience is fully on board with the whole thing, maybe Dinobots in the future."[31] When asked on the subject field, Michael Bay said he hated the Dinobots and they had never been in consideration for being featured in the movies.[32]

During product, Bay attempted to create a misinformation campaign to increment debate over what Transformers would exist appearing in the flick, every bit well as to try to throw fans off from the story of the film; however, Orci confessed information technology was generally unsuccessful.[28] The studio went as far as to censor MTV and Comic Book Resources interviews with Mowry and Furman, who confirmed Arcee and The Fallen would exist in the picture.[33] Bay told Empire that Megatron would not be resurrected, claiming his new tank form was a toy-simply character,[22] just for Orci to confirm Megatron would return in the motion-picture show in February 2009.[34] Bay besides claimed he faked the leaking of daily call sheets from the first week of filming, that revealed Ramón Rodríguez's casting,[35] and the appearance of Jetfire and the twins.[36]

Filming [edit]

Inspired by its utilise in Christopher Nolan's The Nighttime Knight, three activeness sequences in Revenge of the Fallen were shot using IMAX cameras.[18] Although screenwriter Roberto Orci suggested that the IMAX footage would be 3D,[37] Bay afterward said he found 3D besides "gimmicky". Bay added that shooting in IMAX was easier than using IMAX stereoscopic 3-D cameras.[38]

The majority of interior scenes for the film were shot in the former Hughes Shipping soundstages at Playa Vista.[39] From June 2–4, the production filmed an activeness sequence at the Bethlehem Steel site in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which was used to represent a portion of Shanghai.[10] [40] Afterwards, they shot at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.[41] The crew moved to Philadelphia on June 9, where they shot at a defunct PECO Richmond ability station, the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel Academy, the Eastern State Penitentiary, Laurel Loma Cemetery, Philadelphia Metropolis Hall, Rittenhouse Square, celebrated Chancellor Street (which represents a street near Place de la Concorde in Paris), and Wanamaker's.[42] [43] The production moved to Princeton University on June 22.[44] Filming at that place angered some students at the Academy of Pennsylvania, believing Bay had chosen to reshoot scenes at Princeton and script Princeton's name in the film. I shot that was filmed in the University of Pennsylvania was the political party scene, filmed at what students call "The Castle". "The Castle" is home to the prestigious Psi Upsilon Fraternity. However, neither the University of Pennsylvania nor Princeton gave Bay permission to be named in the movie because of a scene that both institutions felt "did not stand for the school" in which Sam's mother ingests marijuana-laced brownies.[45]

A complex of ruins, including two pyramids and the statue of the Sphinx.

Three days of filming were spent in Egypt.

Bay scheduled a break for filming beginning on June 30, turning his attending to blitheness and 2nd unit of measurement scenes because of the potential club strike.[46] Shooting for the Shanghai boxing later connected in Long Beach, California.[47] In September, the coiffure shot at Holloman Air Strength Base and White Sands Missile Range in New United mexican states. The ii locations were used for Qatar in Transformers and stood in for Arab republic of egypt in this film.[48] A scale model in Los Angeles was also used for some shut-ups of the pyramids.[22] Shooting at Tucson International Airdrome and the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group's shipping boneyard took place in October under the false working title Prime Directive (a reference to Star Trek).[49] Filming too took place at Camp Pendleton and Davis–Monthan Air Force Base of operations.[39]

The first unit of measurement then shot for 3 days in Egypt at the Giza pyramid complex and Luxor. The shoot was highly secretive, only according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a crew of 150 Americans and "several dozen local Egyptians" ensured a "remarkably shine" shoot.[50] Bay earned the Egyptian government's approval to film at the pyramids past contacting Zahi Hawass, whom Bay said "put his arm effectually me and said, 'Don't hurt my pyramids.'"[39] A fifty-foot-tall (15 g) photographic camera crane was used at the location.[22] Bay stated he found the climax of the start film to exist weak, partly because it was shot across v different metropolis blocks, making the action disruptive and difficult to follow. On this pic, the final battle in Egypt was devised to arrive easier to follow the activity.[51]

Four days were then spent in Hashemite kingdom of jordan; the Regal Jordanian Air Force aided in filming at Petra, Wadi Rum and Salt because Rex Abdullah 2 is a big fan of science fiction movies.[52] [53] Filming connected at the Place de la Concorde in Paris with second unit shots of the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe.[54] The bandage and coiffure finished principal photography on the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis on Nov 2, 2008.[55]

Effects [edit]

A large human-like robot stands in front of a man in a warehouse.

A screenshot of Starscream confronting Sam. In his audio commentary for the 2007 moving picture, Michael Bay said he wanted more close-ups of the robots for the sequel.

Hasbro became more involved in the designs of the robots than the company was for the first film.[16] The visitor, along with Takara Tomy, suggested to the filmmakers that combining robots be the main draw for the sequel.[56] They insisted on keeping the alternate modes of some of the returning characters like and then that consumers would not have to purchase toys of the aforementioned characters.[57] Bay used a real F-16 Fighting Falcon and tank fire when filming the battles.[25] Many of the new Autobot cars supplied by General Motors were brightly colored to look distinctive on screen.[58] Revenge of the Fallen features 46 robots, while the original movie had 14.[59]

Scott Farrar returned as visual effects supervisor and anticipated moodier employ of lighting every bit well as deeper roles for the Decepticons.[ clarification needed ] He stated that with the bigger deadline, mail service-product would get a "circus".[60] The producers expected that with a bigger budget and with the special effects having worked out, the Transformers would have a larger part. Peter Cullen recalled, "Don Murphy mentioned to me, 'Simply considering of the tremendous expense to animate Optimus Prime, he'll exist in just a certain amount of [Transformers].' But he said, 'Next fourth dimension, if the picture show is a success, you're gonna be in information technology a ton.'"[61] Michael Bay hoped to include more close-ups of the robots' faces.[62] The heads had to be designed with more pieces in order to express emotions in a more than convincing way.[59] Farrar said the animators implemented more "splashes and the hits and the fighting on dirt or moving, banging into trees, [...] things splinter and break, [the robots] spit, they outgas, they sweat, they snort." Shooting in the higher resolution of IMAX required upwards to 72 hours to return a single frame of blitheness.[63] [64] While ILM used xv terabytes for Transformers, they used 140 for the sequel.[53] Particularly problematic furnishings were the lighting, with scenes such every bit Jetfire inside the Smithsonian requiring 41 light sources, and the devastation of the pyramid, which appears in about v shots and required seven months to simulate the beliefs of the blocks.[59] Orci hinted the majority of the Decepticons were entirely computer-generated in both robot and alternate modes, making information technology easier to write additional scenes for them in mail service-production.[65] Rendering the Devastator took over 85% of ILM'due south render farm capacity, and the complexity of the scene and having to return information technology at IMAX resolution caused i computer to "explode".[66]

Music [edit]

The score to Revenge of the Fallen was composed by Steve Jablonsky, who reunited with director Michael Bay to record his score with a 71-piece ensemble of the Hollywood Studio Symphony at the Sony Scoring Stage.[67] Jablonsky and his score producer Hans Zimmer composed various interpretations of a song by Linkin Park called "New Divide" for the score.[68]

Marketing [edit]

An additional $150 million was spent to market the film globally.[69] Hasbro's Revenge of the Fallen toy line included new molds of new and returning characters, besides every bit 2007 figures with new mold elements or new paint schemes.[seventy] The first wave was released on May 30, although Bumblebee and Soundwave debuted beforehand.[71] The 2d wave came in August 2009, which introduced toys such as 2¼-inch human action figures that fit inside the transforming robots, and non-transforming replicas of the cars that tin can be used on a race runway. Product placement partners on the picture show include Burger King, 7-Eleven, LG phones, Kmart, Wal-Mart, YouTube, Nike, Inc. and Thousand&M'due south, as well as Jollibee in the Philippines.[72] General Motors' financial troubles express its involvement in promotion of the sequel, although Paramount acknowledged that with or without GM, their marketing campaign was yet very large and had the foundation of the 2007 flick'southward success.[73] [74] [75] Kyle Busch drove a Revenge of the Fallen busy machine at Infineon Raceway on June 21, 2009,[76] while Josh Duhamel collection a 2010 Camaro at the Indianapolis 500.[77] At the movie's launch in China, a version of Bumblebee was constructed using a Volkswagen Jetta.[78]

Chris Mowry and artist Alex Milne, who had collaborated on The Reign of Starscream comic book, reunited for IDW Publishing's prequel to the film. Originally prepare to be a five-role serial entitled Destiny,[79] it was divide into two simultaneously published series, titled Brotherhood and Defiance. Alliance is drawn by Milne and began in Dec 2008; information technology focuses on the human and Autobot perspectives.[80] Defiance, which started the following calendar month, is fatigued by Dan Khanna and is set before either film, showing the beginnings of the war.[81]

The site'southward critical consensus reads, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a noisy, underplotted, and overlong special effects caricature that lacks a human bear upon."[103] On Metacritic, the movie has an boilerplate score of 35 out of 100, based on 32 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[104] Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film a "B+", compared to the "A" that the original moving-picture show had scored.[105]

According to The Washington Post, Revenge of the Fallen was Bay's worst-reviewed film at the fourth dimension of release, faring fifty-fifty worse than Pearl Harbor (2001).[106] Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times described the picture as "in-your-face, ear-splitting and unrelenting. It'due south easy to walk away feeling similar yous've spent 2 hours in the mad, wild, hydraulic cover of a car compactor".[107]

Roger Ebert, who had given the 2007 film three stars,[108] gave the sequel only ane, calling it "...a horrible experience of unbearable length", a phrase which subsequently became the title of his third bad-movie-reviews drove. Later in his review, Ebert discouraged moving-picture show-goers from seeing the film by saying "If you want to save yourself the ticket toll, go into the kitchen, cue up a male choir singing the music of hell, and go a child to start banging pots and pans together. Then shut your optics and use your imagination."[109] He after wrote on his blog about the film, "The twenty-four hour period volition come when Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen volition be studied in film classes and shown at cult picture show festivals. It will be seen, in retrospect, as mark the end of an era. Of class there will be many more CGI-based action epics, but never once again one this swollen, excessive, incomprehensible, long (149 minutes) or expensive ($200 million)."[110] Ebert would proceed to lambast the film (and, sometimes, the Transformers franchise in general) in other picture show reviews and responses to letters and emails sent to him.[ citation needed ] Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers did non give the picture show any stars, because that "Revenge of the Fallen has a shot at the championship 'Worst Movie of the Decade'."[111] He later named it as the "worst moving picture of the decade". Other reviewers, while however critical, were less damning of the flick, The A.V. Lodge gave the film a "C-", lament about the writing and length, simply mentioning the effects and action scenes were impressive.[112] Among positive reviews, Amy Biancolli of the Houston Chronicle chosen it "a well-oiled, loudly revving summer activeness vehicle that does all that'south required, and so some",[113] Jordan Mintzer from Variety said it "takes the franchise to a vastly superior level of artificial intelligence",[114] and Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly wrote that "Revenge of the Fallen may be a massive overdose of popcorn greased with motor oil. But it knows how to feed your inner 10-year-onetime'due south ambition for destruction."[115] A review from Empire magazine said :"What saves it, simply about, are the effects. At times the frame is and so packed with whirring cogs and twirling cranks that you could replicate the event past staring at the innards of a domestic apparatus, only when these CGI moto-men from some other earth duke it out, the images are often and so screwy it's impossible to do anything merely sit and stare."[116]

"On every level this moving-picture show is as bankrupt as GM. [...] Transformers: The Revenge of The Fallen is beyond bad, information technology carves out its own category of godawfulness."
— Peter Travers, Rolling Stone moving-picture show critic[111]

There was considerable negative reaction to the characters Mudflap and Skids, who some perceived every bit embodying racist stereotypes. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times said that "the characters [...] indicate that minstrelsy remains as much in fashion in Hollywood as when, well, Jar Jar Binks was set up loose past George Lucas".[117] Critic Scott Mendelson said "To say that these two are the nigh astonishingly racist caricatures that I've ever seen in a mainstream movement film would be an understatement."[118] Harry Knowles, founder of Ain't It Cool News, went further, asking his readers "not to support this moving-picture show" because "you'll be taking [your children] to see a film with the everyman forms of humor, stereotypes, and racism around."[119] Bay (the director) has attempted to defend the pic as "good clean fun" and insisted that "Nosotros're just putting more than personality in."[120] Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman responded to the controversy with "It'due south really hard for u.s.a. to sit down here and endeavor to justify it. I recall that would be very foolish, and if someone wants to be offended past it, it's their right. We were very surprised when we saw it, besides, and it's a choice that was made. If annihilation, it just shows y'all that we don't command every aspect of the film."[121] Tom Kenny stated in a belatedly 2020 interview that he was hired as a placeholder for the role of Skids, but that Michael Bay ended up using his voice in the last version of the pic; a decision that Kenny admitted he was embarrassed by.[122]

Another major complaint about the moving picture was Bay's usage of the IMAX format. Instead of using IMAX for complete unbroken sequences similar to director Christopher Nolan's approach for The Night Knight, Bay chose to utilise the format primarily on a shot-past-shot ground, combining conventional 35mm footage and IMAX shots in the same sequence. That arroyo, combined with rapid cutting, created a jarring, highly unpleasant feel for about moviegoers.[123]

Player Shia LaBeouf was unimpressed with the picture, stating "Nosotros got lost. We tried to get bigger. It'south what happens to sequels. Information technology'due south like, how do you meridian the first one? You've got to go bigger. Michael Bay went and so big that it became too big, and I think you lost the ballast of the film...You lot lost a bit of the relationship. Unless you have those relationships, then the pic doesn't matter. Then information technology's merely a agglomeration of robots fighting each other."[124] Bay has admitted his disappointment with the picture and has apologized, saying the film was "crap" and blaming the 2007–08 Writers' strike, saying "Information technology was very hard to put (the sequel) together that rapidly after the writers' strike (of 2007–08)".[125]
